Dr. Grace Ayensu-Danquah, the US-trained surgeon and MP for Essikado-Ketan, has been nominated as Ghana's Deputy Minister for Health and recently faced parliamentary vetting.
During the session, she defended her academic credentials and professorship, citing over 15 years of teaching surgery. The vetting was marked by a public apology from Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, who had previously questioned her appointment. Dr. Ayensu-Danquah pledged to address the backlog of unemployed doctors and nurses and to improve training for treating medical conditions like fistula.
Her nomination and vetting have sparked significant public and political attention.

It’s actually refreshing to see someone with real medical expertise and a commitment to fixing healthcare issues like unemployment among doctors get a shot at leadership. Hopefully, Dr. Ayensu-Danquah’s progressive ideas and focus on public health will bring some much-needed reforms to Ghana’s healthcare system.
