Ghana is undertaking its most comprehensive mining law reforms in nearly two decades, aiming to curb illegal mining (galamsey), shorten mining licence durations, and ensure direct revenue-sharing with local communities.
The government has intensified its crackdown on illegal mining, arresting over 1,300 suspects and seizing hundreds of excavators and machinery. New initiatives, such as the Blue Water Guards and the Responsible Mining Programme, are being rolled out to protect water bodies and promote sustainable mining practices. The reforms also include stricter licensing requirements, increased oversight, and efforts to reclaim forest reserves and major mines for local ownership.
Authorities emphasize that the fight against illegal mining is ongoing and requires balancing environmental protection with the livelihoods of responsible miners.
